Be Next | Nico Porteous & Zoi Sadowski-Synnott - Director of PhotographyIn 2018 I was asked by Director Jason Hancox to DP this piece for Snow Sports New Zealand. He proposed his concept and we put our heads together and came up with a mostly interior shoot with some high contrast scenes, complemented by other on snow scenes.Breaking it down.Timeframe:For the shoot we had had 1 day for pre lighting and 1 day for Shooting (with 4 different athletes).Lens and aspect ratio:The director and I decided on Kowa Anamorphic lenses for this shoot as he wanted a moody, fx’y look and a super wide aspect ratio for the final output so I decided on the Kowa 2x Anamorphic’s. Everything was framed for a 2:39 crop but in the end they decided to go with the 3:55 look you get from the FS7’s 16:9 Sensor for the final output.Cameras:For the interviews we used a 3 camera set up. 1x Red Dragon and 2x FS7’s. The Red was our master camera and for this we used a Eyedirect system so that the talent could look directly at the camera lens without being nervous as we wanted that for their main eyeline. We also used the new Syrp Magic Carpet pro for the slider setup and a Movi Pro for the tracking shots.IV Lighting:Because of the Kowa’s softness and the Dragons sensor I built the lighting around 500ISO and a stop of T3.5 to maintain a bit of sharpness and contrast. For this the key was 1x M18 and 1x D12 into a Ultrabounce and then back through Bleached Muslin for a super soft source. Fill was a 6x6 Black rag to increase the contrast ratio. Kicker was from a small fresnel dedo from across the room and another to light the trophies. The practical lighting was from the rear down lights which i tilted into camera to make the Kowas flare and were conveniently 32k to bring up a warmer look. The setups with the hanging frames were light by 2x 1k Daylight panels with 2x Dedo’s at 32k in the back for the warm flares. On snow footage:The on snow footage was captured using the Movi Pro as well as sticks and handheld to match the different looks.Credits:Director - Jason HancoxDOP -Toby WilsonAdditional on snow footage - Heath PattersonEditor - Piers Faircloth-HardingLens and Lighting Hire: Queenstown Cameras LTD and Local Action LTD.
Southern Lakes HeliSki 1 min - Director of photographyOn the snowiest day of the year in September 2018 I was engaged to DOP this short to advertise a Heli Skiing product for Southern Lakes Heli-ski.Shooting from the ground and the air in a very quick style I used my Movi Pro kit along with a Red Dragon and lightweight zooms to move efficiently and get everything we needed in the short window we had for the day.The helicopter to helicopter scenes were with the Movi Setup from the camera ship and then on the ground I went with handheld for some floaty lifestyles, Movi for the skiing tracking shots and then a Inspire 2 Drone with X5R camera to capture a variety of dynamic angles.DOP - Toby Wilson.Director - Toby Crawford.
