About Toby

Toby is a freelance cinematographer and director originating from New Zealand and currently residing in Austria, within the EEA. He is an interpreter of stories—an artist who translates mechanical and technical aspects into a visual language.

Toby's journey began on a cattle farm in the rugged landscapes of New Zealand. He sought escape through the realms of photography and action sports, eventually leading him to pursue a career combining the two. Toby is dedicated to his craft and revels in having a deep involvement in every project. He values the collaborative aspects of filmmaking over individual pursuits, entrusting his vision to handpicked talents.

Toby has a solid foundation in traditional production, starting in 2010 as a 2nd AC on large sets. He has since progressed to gain extensive experience as a cinematographer and director, working on commercials, documentaries, television, and content formatted for online platforms. Toby leverages this experience to build creative and realistic concepts, selecting the right crew, equipment, and format to deliver outstanding results. An early adopter of modern filmmaking technologies, he combines these with more intentional forms of cinematography.

Toby is experienced in high-pressure, single-take shooting in various challenging environments.

An artist at heart and a creative problem solver in the moment, Toby strives to perform at his utmost and dedicates himself fully to every project.
